Location
    (May 9, 1868- )

Population (metro area): 342,855 (2000 census)
Known as 'The Biggest Little City in the World'
It went from being overshadowed by Nevada's mining towns to being overshadowed by Las Vegas.
Like Las Vegas, its growth in the 20th century was largely fueled by gambling and quickie divorces.
Its temperatures have ranged from a low of 19 below zero to a high of 108 F.
Its suburbs were struck by an unusual 'swarm' of earthquakes (February-April, 2008), which some seismologists think may indicate that a large earthquake is imminent.
Despite the title, Reno 911! does not actually film there.
In the 50s, the city implemented more lenient business taxes to diversify the economy beyond gambling.
It hosts the Great Reno Balloon Race, the largest free hot air ballooning event in the country.
It is home of the National Bowling Stadium, which hosts the US Bowling Congress championships and was the location of the finale in the movie 'Kingpin.'
Thanks to the geography of their respective counties, Reno is much closer to legalized prostitution than Las Vegas is.
