Why he might be annoying:

He suffered a skull fracture after diving head-first into a pool at night, only to discover it was empty (1904).
He has the records for most times hit by a pitch for both a season (51 times in 1896) and a career (287), which probably did not help that skull fracture any.
He threw out his shoulder (1898), forcing a move from shortstop to first base, after which he was never as effective a player.
He was nicknamed 'Ee-Yah' after one of the yelps he made while managing.
He was suspended for taunting opponents with a tin whistle (1907).
He suffered a nervous breakdown at the end of the 1925 season and had to retire from baseball.

Why he might not be annoying:

He led the NL in fielding percentage and putouts by a shortstop three seasons.
He had an infectious smile that umpire Tim Hurst called 'the grin that echoed.'
He attended Cornell law school, passed the bar exam and had a successful legal practice during the offseasons.
His wife Elizabeth died of complications from childbirth after only 13 months of marriage (1897).
He was in a car crash in which he broke both legs and his left arm, fractured his skull again and suffered a concussion (1911).
Connie Mack called him one of the three greatest managers in history, along with John McGraw and Joe McCarthy.
