Constructed by Persian King Maussollos of Caria
One of the seven wonders of the ancient world
Why Mausoleum might be annoying
It is the resting place of a king whose reign is nothing extraordinary except for the construction of his tomb.
It was far from the Persian capital.
The idea of building it was conceived by the wife and sister of Maussollos.
It is dwarfed by a similar tomb and fellow ancient wonder, the Great Pyramid.
Why Mausoleum might not be annoying
It was full of beautiful life-sized statues of animals and humans.
Some of the surviving sculptures are on display at the British Museum in London.
It was turned into a massive crusader castle after an earthquake dealt heavy damage to it.
The Knights of St. John fortified their new castle using stones from it (1494).
Eventually, no original stones of its structure existed (1522).
Though it is destroyed, in its place stands an impressive medieval castle.
