Why he might be annoying
He sold off his country's electricity to fuel the Nagorno-Karabakh War, literally leaving Armenians out in the dark.
He rules Armenia as an autocrat, banning the main opposition party Armenian Revolutionary Federation and jailing its leaders.
He even banned Yerkir, Armenia's largest daily newspaper owned by the opposition party he banned.
His first name is 'novel' spelled backwards.
He led protests accusing the government of vote fraud when he lost the elections (2008).
He is often at odds with both Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh and Turkey over recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
He resigned because of his growing unpopularity, economic difficulties and tensions with Azerbaijan.
Why he might not be annoying
His family survived the Armenian Genocide.
He's fluent in Armenian, Assyrian, Russian, French, English, German, Arabic and some extinct languages.
With the exception of the 2008 election protests, he maintains a huge amount of privacy since his resignation, devoting his time to scientific study.
