    (December 15, 1907-December 5, 2012)
Born in Rio de Janiero, Brazil
Chief architect overseeing the design and construction of the new capital city of Brasilla (1956-60)
He did not graduate high school until age 21.
Catholic authorities refused to consecrate his Church of Saint Francis of Assisi due to its unorthodox design, notably the omission of a confessional.
Fidel Castro said 'Niemeyer and I are the last Communists on this planet.'
One of his most recent projects is a sculpture protesting US economic sanctions against Cuba.
Following a right-wing coup (1964), his office was pillaged and he was forced into exile.
He was a pioneer in using reinforced concrete to give his buildings dynamic curves.
At age 89, he designed the Niteroi Museum of Contemporary Art, which many critics consider his greatest work.
