David Byrne said of him joining the Heads, 'Before Jerry, a lot of our songs were like sketches. Jerry made it possible for us to fill in some of the missing colors, and we became a real band.'

With Talking Heads, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2002).
