The Resume
(September 26, 1889-May 26, 1976)
Wrote 'Being and Time,' 'An Introduction to Metaphysics' and 'Early Greek Thinking'
Why he might be annoying
He initially studied to be a monk.
He was a student of Edmund Husserl's and later withdrew his dedications to his teacher and formerly renounced his philosophy (although he was pressured to do so by the Nazis).
He was a member of the Nazi party and a supporter of Hitler.
Almost all of his philosophical writings are dark and gloomy.
He used the word 'being' in so many different contexts that it wasn't uncommon to see a sentence of his that read something like 'being's being being.'
Some consider him to be a charlatan and his work to be meaningless because some of it is so steeped in jargon that they feel he simply threw words out to distract the readers from his lack of content.
He perfected the continental tradition of unclear writing and inventing words.
He had an affair with his student Hannah Arendt.
Why he might not be annoying
He was removed from his teaching post after World War II.
He still has a lot of followers.
He believed that people should live authentically and not fear death.
