Why he might be annoying:

He and his first wife got divorced after a decade of marriage.
He went from parodying commercials in Bob and Ray to serving as a pitchman for Skippy Peanut Butter and Hartford Insurance.
He was a lot less successful as a solo act than as half of Bob and Ray.
He said that late in life he was ‘typecast’ as Chris’s dad (in ‘Get A Life’ and ‘Cabin Boy’).

Why he might not be annoying:

He served with an Army supply unit in Europe during World War II.
His second marriage, to Lee Peppers, lasted 54 years until her death.
He and Goulding had great chemistry.
His and Ray’s absurdist humor delivered deadpan was a major influence on later generations of comedians.
Chris Elliott acknowledged that part of the reason he was hired as a writer/performer for Late Night was David Letterman's admiration for Bob and Ray.
