    Born in Dublin, Ireland
    Wrote the plays 'The Quare Fellow' (1954) and 'The Hostage' (1958)
    Wrote the novel 'Borstal Boy' (1958) and the autobiography 'Confessions of an Irish Rebel' (1965)

Why he might be annoying:

    An IRA member, he spent four years in jail for attempted murder (1942-46).
    His last book, 'Brendan Behan's New York,' featured endless name-dropping.
    A self-described 'drinker with a writing problem,' he became a caricature of the drunken Irishman.

Why he might not be annoying:

    His family introduced him to alcohol at age eight.
    He put his prison experience to good use in his writings.
    He influenced several songs by the Pogues.
    He coined the quip, 'Critics are like eunuchs in a harem: they know how it's done, they see it done every day, but they're unable to do it themselves.'
