The Resume

    (March 9, 1895-December 20, 1966)
    Born in Friedenau, Germany
    Brother of Reichsmarschall Herman Goering

Why he might be annoying:

It was rumored that his godfather, physician Hermann von Epenstein, was actually his biological father – especially since he strongly resembled von Epenstein when he grew into adulthood.
Because of his last name, he had trouble finding work after World War II.
He lapsed into bouts of alcoholism and depression.
His wife left him and took their daughter with her to Peru after he cheated on her.
His daughter regularly wrote to him until she turned ten, but he never answered her letters.
The Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial declined to name him Righteous Among the Nations, arguing that he had not taken ‘extraordinary risks’ to rescue Jews.

Why he might not be annoying:

While living in Austria during the 1920s, he told a friend, ‘I have a brother in Germany who is getting involved with that bastard Hitler. And he is going to come to a bad end if he continues that way.’
On dozens of occasions, he used guile and flattery to persuade his brother to sign documents freeing Jews from concentration camps or allowing Jews to emigrate from Germany.
He set up a secret Swiss bank account used to help Jewish refugees fleeing Europe.
He forged his brother’s signature on transit documents to allow Jews and dissidents to escape.
After he was named an export director for the Skoda Works in Czechoslovakia, he would send trucks to concentration camps and announce that he needed prisoners for labor. On the way back from the camps, the trucks would stop in an isolated area and the prisoners were allowed to escape.
The Gestapo issued arrest warrants against him four times. (Although his brother intervened to get him off the hook each time.)
In an interview with a psychiatrist during the Nuremburg Trials, Hermann observed, ‘He was always the antithesis of myself…. But he’s not a bad fellow, Albert.’
