Why he might be annoying
He makes people realize that sports are not as important as the human condition.
His acceptance speech was mostly incoherent, but he received a standing ovation, nevertheless.
Why he might not be annoying
He was on the team for three years without playing in a game.
In his final game Waverly was beating his team, Northwest High 45-0, with seconds remaining.
His coach Dave Frantz asked Waverly coach Derek DeWitt if it would be alright to bring Porter in so that at least he could touch the ball, play a down, take a knee and that would be a big thrill for him (obviously, he didn't want Porter to get hurt).
Opposing Coach DeWitt, said it is not enough just to let him touch the ball, but demanded that no one on his team touch him and he be allowed to score a touchdown, which he did.
In an act of true sportsmanship, coach DeWitt and his team willingly gave up an easy shutout allowing him to score a touchdown (October 2002).
