Religious Figure

The Resume

    (January 8, 1735-January 3, 1815)
    Born in Upper Marlboro, Maryland
Catholic priest and first archbishop of Baltimore, the first archdiocese in the United States from 12/12/1790 - 12/3/1815 (his death)
Graduated from College of Saint Omer in France
    Founded Georgetown University

Why he might be annoying:

He was soft on slavery, opposing it but also opposing abolitionism and favoring a more graduated approach to its elimination.
He was excommunicated (later lifted) by the archbishop of Quebec.
He belonged to the Jesuits when they were suppressed by the Pope but continued to act as one.
He owed his archbishopric in part at least to Benjamin Franklin's lobbying of the papal nuncio to the United States.

Why he might not be annoying:

He came from a successful and famous family and was first cousins with Charles Carroll, the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence.
He helped set up the unique relationship between the Catholic Church and the United States which was predicated on the United States being the first country to officially grant complete religious freedom to its citizens in history.
He strongly encouraged the reading of the Bible.
He built the first cathedral in US history.
He called for the celebration of the Liturgy in the vernacular two hundred years before the Catholic Church adopted the practice.
