Why they might be annoying:

At any one time, they only had six members at most, 9994 fewer than their name implied.
Their first Top 40 hit, 'Because the Night,' came after famed lead singer Natalie Merchant left the band for a solo career (even though Natalie sang lead on that song).
The band's success dwindled after they replaced Merchant with Mary Ramsey.

Why they might not be annoying:

Lead guitarist Robert Buck died in 2000 from liver failure at forty-two.
Though they haven't 'officially' broken up, the band's been fairly inactive since Buck's death.
