    Died in Bethel, Connecticut, United States
    Unlike most famous people of her time, she had a comfortable childhood.
    She refused to support women’s suffrage.
    She disliked being called a muckraker.
    She was the only woman in her class when she graduated Allegheny College (1880).
    John Rockefeller bankrupted her father’s oil business, so she protested against business monopolies.
    She created a new kind of journalism known as investigative journalism.
    She campaigned against trusts.
    New York Times called her one of the ‘Twelve Greatest American Women’ (1922).
    She died of pneumonia.
