The Resume

    (October 17, 1886-September 7, 1971)
    Born in Colorado Springs, Colorado
Acted in 'Little Women,' 'Mutiny on the Bounty,' 'Ah! Wilderness,' 'Jezebel,' 'You Can't Take it With You,' 'Meet John Doe,' 'When Ladies Meet,' 'Rings on Her Fingers,' and 'I'll be Seeing You'
Best known for her starring role on the CBS Sitcom, 'December Bride'
Also well known for her recurring role as Mrs. Jones in the 'Jones Family' films
Appeared in over 30 stage plays

Why she might be annoying:

    She was divorced.
She was typecast in sweet 'motherly' roles for the majority of her career.
She is often confused with Beulah Bondi, who also was typecast as mothers.
She lost a Supporting Actress Oscar to Fay Bainter, for a film which she had also appeared in (Jezebel).
She acted in the 'Wizard of Oz' knock-off, 'The Blue Bird,' which is credited with ending Shirley Temple's career.
She carried on a long-term lesbian affair with actress Marjorie Main.
She claimed to have taken up acting because 'I can't do anything else very well.'
She was a science fiction novel junkie.
She owned a random 'coffee plantation' in Brazil which she acquired in her twilight years.
She was engaged for years to an Argentinian industrialist, but he eventually died and the engagement fell through.

Why she might not be annoying:

On her cheery, optimistic image, she said, 'its very simple - Lady Macbeth and I aren't friends.'
She is one of the few celebrity contestants on 'What's My Line' to disguise her voice so completely as to fool the panel (winning a whopping 50 dollars for herself).
She was replaced at the last minute by Fay Holder for the role of Mrs. Hardy in the successful 'Andy Hardy' franchise.
She was forced to stop taking flying lessons at the age of 70 for studio insurance purposes.
She was a metaphysics expert who frequently surprised her co-stars with her knowledge of the earth's satellites and the constellations.
She did live modeling for Flora, Fauna, and Merriweather in Disney's 'Sleeping Beauty,' along with Frances Bavier (Aunt Bee) and Madge Blake (Batman's Aunt Harriet).
She had excellent chemistry with her 'December Bride' co-star, Verna Felton (ironically the voice of Flora).
She requested that her body be donated to medical research upon her death.
She was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1939 for her role in 'You Can't Take it With You.'
She was nominated for a Best Actress Emmy in both 1957 and 1958 for 'December Bride.'
Spring, a name embodying sweetness, was her actual birth name.
She had a memorable guest spot on 'I Dream of Jeannie' as Anthony Nelson's doting mother (it would be her penultimate role).
