Attorney

The Resume

    (November 2, 1886-January 1, 1962)
    Born in Wilton Junction, Iowa
Birth name was Harold Lee Giesler
Celebrity trial attorney (civil and criminal)
Clients included Charlie Chaplin, Busby Berkeley, Bugsy Siegel, and Marilyn Monroe
President of the Beverly Hills Bar Association
Author of 'Hollywood Lawyer: The Jerry Giesler Story' (1960)

Why he might be annoying:

    He was a divorce attorney.
He got Errol Flynn acquitted of statutory rape charges (1942).
He got Black Dahlia murder suspect George Hobel acquitted of incest and child molestation charges (1949).
He got Busby Berkeley acquitted on drunk driving and manslaughter charges after the first two trials ended in a hung jury (1935).
He won a reduced sentence for Walter Wanger on charges of shooting a Hollywood agent for paying too much attention to wife Joan Bennett (1951).
He paved the way for every self-serving high-powered ambulance-chasing celebrity attorney to come (including the O. J.> lawyers and Gloria Allred ).

Why he might not be annoying:

He got his start working with Clarence Darrow.
He was one of the few celebrity attorneys not (at least publicly) known for sleeping with his clients.
His reputation for winning difficult or scandalous cases was such that 'Get me Giesler!' became a popular media epithet in celebrity circles.
He successfully defended Robert Mitchum when he was tried for smoking pot, arguing it down to a misdemeanor with a reduced sentence. Ironically, the conviction only made Mitchum a bigger star.
He won an acquittal for Lana Turner's daughter Cheryl Crane when she was tried for the murder of Johnny Stompanato, which was ruled justifiable homicide (he was physically abusive towards Crane's mother).
He was approached by George Reeves' mother to push for a reinvestigation into her son's suicide as a possible murder. After ordering a second autopsy, he determined no new evidence could be found and declined.
He died after a series of heart attacks, the last and most serious in October of 1961.
