As Taliban leader, he was extremely reclusive and spoke only through his foreign minister.
He ordered the systematic repression of Afghan women and instituted Islamic criminal law that prescribed amputations and stonings.
He issued edicts ordering the execution of anyone converting to another religion.
He ordered explosives set to destroy two statues of Buddha considered relics by many historians.
One of his quotes was that 'Life can be led with just a few basics. The luxuries don't matter;' however, he lived in a huge house built with Osama bin Laden's money.
He refuses to be photographed.
He abused a sacred relic (Mohammed's cloth) for propaganda purposes by waving it on top of a mosque.
He said he would rather see Afghanistan destroyed than Osama bin Laden captured by US forces.
Before American and Northern Alliance forces invaded Afghanistan and deposed him, he claimed that 'Even if [America] were twice as strong or twice that, it could not be strong enough to defeat us.'

He fought against the Soviets.
His Taliban regime suppressed Afghan warlords.
Unlike Saddam Hussein, his foreign policy was not very aggressive.
He doesn't crave publicity.
