    (circa 484 BC-circa 425 BC)
Born in Halicarnassus (modern-day Bodrum), Turkey
    Ancient Greek historian
Wrote 'The Histories' about the Greco-Persian Wars
Known as 'the Father of History'

Why he might be annoying:

He was also called 'the Father of Lies' for including other people's tall tales in his histories.
He lifted some of his information from an earlier historian, Hecateus.
Little is known for certain about his life.
Plutarch complained that he was biased against Thebes.
He allegedly left the Greek colonies in Asia Minor for Athens after his countrymen ridiculed his work.

Why he might not be annoying:

He apparently traveled extensively through the ancient world conducting interviews and collecting material for his histories.
He was reportedly granted a financial reward by the Athenian assembly in recognition of his work.
When he read his 'Histories' in public, the future historian Thucydides was so moved that he started to cry.
He said, 'If a man insisted always on being serious, and never allowed himself a bit of fun and relaxation, he would go mad or become unstable without knowing it.'
