He was a hermit living in a cave.
His penitential practices were particularly harsh.
He only ate one day a week.
He wore chains.
He was one of only four Popes to abdicate the papacy.
He practiced as asceticism - abstinence from everything.
His order, the Celestines, is defunct.
He is among the shortest papacies - 5 months, 8 days.
He didn't like the traditions and ceremony of being Pope.
He was known to have appointed multiple people to the same positions.

Why he might not be annoying:

His father died when he was very young.
He tried to model his life after John the Baptist.
He was elected unanimously by the College of Cardinals.
He never wanted - nor thought he was qualified - to be Pope.
His naivety was taken advantage of by the Vatican Court.
He was a 'spiritual' Pope who broke a long line of 'political' Popes.
The main goal of his papacy was to keep clergy from using their spiritual power to obtain worldly power.
He was the only Pope to have two coronations.
The law he put forth giving the Pope the ability to abdicate helped to end the Western Schism, which had threatened to destroy the Catholic Church.
He is the only Pope to advocate for 'spiritual' reasons, the others did it because of papal politics.
After his abdication, he tried to return to his old life.
His successor, Boniface VIII, imprisoned him for fear the people would revolt.
He died while imprisoned by Boniface VIII.
He was an enormously popular Pope, especially with the common people.
He was canonized a mere 17 years after his death.
