    (circa October 14, 1925-July 1, 2015)
    Born in United States
Developed the Herkie jump: one arm straight up in the air and the other on the hip; one leg extended straight out, the other bent back
Founded the National Cheerleaders Association and the Cheerleader Supply Company
    Received a patent for a pom-pom with a hidden handle (1971)
Wrote 'The Complete Book of Cheerleading' (1975)
    Nicknamed 'Mr. Cheerleader'
He became a cheerleader because he was considered too short for team sports.
He created the Herkie by accident: 'It was just a poor jump split. I don't like to tell people that.'
He said his business was recession-proof because 'If times get bad, a father would sell the boat before he would tell his daughter she can't have pom-poms and her cheerleader sweater.'
He sold his companies in 1986 when 'I couldn't think like a 15-year-old girl anymore.'
He served with the Navy in World War II.
He had a Herkie candy bar named after him.
He sold his cheerleading camp program for $20 million.
Sports Illustrated wrote, 'He may well go down in history as the Arturo Toscanini of cheerleading and perhaps its Shakespeare, Beethoven, Diaghilev and Pulitzer as well.'
