Why he might be annoying
As a teen, he ran with a gang and committed burglaries and car thefts.
His arrogance made him the man audiences loved to hate.
’Dart World’ claimed his appearance at the 1982 British International Championship produced ‘the most sustained barrage of jeering witnessed at a darts match.’
His career went into a slump when he developed ‘dartitis,’ a psychological hangup about releasing the darts.
When several football (soccer) players reported having been sexually abused as youths by coach Barry Bennell, he tweeted that the victims should have ‘sorted that poof out’ when they ‘got older and fitter,’ and declared, ‘Dart players tough guys, footballers wimps.’ (2016)
Why he might not be annoying
He was the big star of darts’ first golden age.
Fellow world champ Rod Harrington said, ‘You’ve always got to have someone like Eric in any sport because people then sit up and watch…. He took darts from just being a pub game to actually being classified as a sport.’
He mentored future #1 player Phil Taylor, including loaning him £10,000 so he could quit his day job.
