Although he considered himself a poet first and foremost, he is best remembered for his historical novel 'I, Claudius.'
He did not care for 'I, Claudius,' and said it was written solely for financial reasons.
After breaking up with poet Laura Riding, he revised his autobiography to remove all references to her.
While collaborating with Alan Hodge on two books, he began a relationship with Hodge's wife Beryl, eventually marrying her.
He was so badly wounded during the Battle of the Somme that he was mistakenly reported as dead.
'I, Claudius' inspired a critically acclaimed BBC miniseries and the Sesame Street parody 'Me, Claudius.'
He wrote, 'There is no money in poetry, but then there's no poetry in money.'
