    Died of pulmonary complications four days before his 88th birthday

Why he might be annoying:

    Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, he tended to be cast as unsympathetic and/or pathetic types.
    His deadpan expression often screamed, 'something smells bad.'
    He was rarely a leading man.

Why he might not be annoying:

    During the Second World War, he was stationed in Italy as an Infantryman.
    ‘Television Guest Stars: An Illustrated Chronicle for Performers of the Sixties and Seventies’ pegged him as the record holder for most TV series with a guest appearance (minimum 150).
    He was no slouch at playing competent higher-ranking types, though.
    His one marriage bore him but one child.
