U.S. Congressman

The Resume

    (January 26, 1965- )
    Born in Bakersfield, California
Birth name is Kevin Owen McCarthy
    Former California State Assemblyman
Elected to represent California's 23rd district in the U.S. House in 2006
Elected to House leadership as the Republican Chief Deputy Whip, from 2009 to 2011
Served as House Majority Whip, from 2011 to 2014
Elected to House majority leader by the Republican House Caucus, in the wake of Rep. Eric Cantor's primary loss to Dave Brat, on June 19, 2014
After 15 rounds of voting, elected as Speaker of the House (January 6, 2023)
Became the first Speaker of the House ever voted out of the position (October 3, 2023)

Why he might be annoying:

Google searches tend to yield results of the Invasion of the Body Snatchers cult star with the same name.
He counted among his foreign policy credentials his visit to a country called Hungria (making him the first, and only, politician to hold such a distinction).
Despite being close to 45 at the time, he co-founded the GOP Young Guns Program, with fellow '[alleged] young guns' Eric Cantor and Paul Ryan.
He was mercilessly mocked by Rachel Maddow for starting the program, who derived a weird satisfaction from enunciating the 'guns' phrase by inserting a 'z' on the end.
Later, following Rep. Aaron Schock's resignation amidst ethics probes, Maddow zeroed in on a photo of Schock working out in the House gym with Rep. McCarthy in the background, joking 'See the guy in the red T-shirt sort of out of focus? He really was supposed to be the Young Gun guy... no offense, but when you're the paunchy guy in the background, you can't be the Young Gun anymore. New guy is obviously the Young Gun - now THAT is young!'
He was touted as John Boehner's presumptive successor, but came off as inarticulate and woefully unprepared for the job.
By the time he became the House Majority Whip, he had passed only two pieces of legislation (changing the names of the local post office and flight research center), making him the most inexperienced person to hold the position in over a century.
His thin record didn't seem to matter to most Republicans until he opened his big mouth and admitted that the Benghazi special committee investigation, was politically motivated with the intent of bringing down Hillary Clinton's poll numbers (and claiming that it was working).
Republicans rushed to implement damage control, virtually disowning McCarthy as the first choice for House Speaker. After assessing the situation, he allegedly concluded that he did not have the 218 votes that would be required to be elected.

Why he might not be annoying:

He's friends with Kate Upton's Congressman uncle.
He opened his first business, a deli, after winning a $5,000 lottery (later selling it to attend college).
He obtained a B.S. in marketing in 1989 and an M.B.A. in 1994 (both from California State University).
Rachel Maddow also mocked his poor speech pronouncements (which, on their own, shouldn't be an issue).
He successfully pushed legislation to rename his local post office and research facility after Buck Owens and Neil Armstrong, respectively.
John Boehner allegedly broke the news to him that he was resigning only moments before his public announcement (literally before walking onto the stage).
He allowed Kevin Spacey to shadow him during his job as part of preparations to portray Frank Underwood, in House of Cards.
He admitted publicly what many Republicans likely were saying privately (unintentionally providing fodder for Hillary Clinton's Presidential campaign).
He penned a column for Breitbart News, but pulled his piece after the site posted Photoshopped images of Nancy Pelosi’s head on Miley Cyrus’ body on all-fours (2014).
