She prohibited smoking in the White House except for President Ulysses S. Grant's cigars.
She held Tuesday afternoon receptions, in which she was asked if blacks would be permitted, to which she replied: 'Admit all.'
She and President Ulysses S. Grant spent more than two years touring the world.
She was the first First Lady to write a book of her memories.
She became friends with the First Ladies that followed her.
She is buried in Grant's Tomb.
