Why Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic might be annoying:

    Francis Drake held the city for ransom in 1586.
    Between 1795 and 1822, the city's control tossed amongst the French, Spanish, and Haitians.
    After 1930's San Zenon hurricane, Rafael Trujillo rebuilt the town, renaming it Ciudad Trujillo.
    The name reverted back to Santo Domingo when he was killed in 1961.

    It is the oldest European settlement in the Western Hemisphere.
    The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, founded in 1538, is the oldest institution of higher learning in the New World.
    Some of the most famous denizens are designer Oscar de la Renta, Sammy Sosa, and Manny Ramirez.
    The city hosted the 2003 Pan American Games.
