Wrestler
    (June 30, 1891-May 29, 1953)
Born in New York City, New York
Birth name was Frank Simmons Leavitt
Fought in 6,738 pro wrestling matches
Appeared in the films 'We're in the Money' (1935), 'Reckless' (1935), 'Big City' (1937), 'The Gladiator' (1938) and 'Mighty Joe Young' (1949)
Because of his large stature, he was able to lie about his age and join the army at 14.
At his peak, he weighed over 300 pounds.
Before coming up with his final moniker, he wrestled under the names Soldier Leavitt, Hell's Kitchen Bill-Bill and Stone Mountain.
During a temporary retirement from wrestling, he worked as a Miami police officer, until he was fired for accepting a glass of champagne from Al Capone.
He ran for a seat in the Georgia House of Representatives, but quickly withdrew his candidacy (1938).
While in the army, he served in Mexico under John J. Pershing and in France during WWI.
During a wrestling tour of Europe, he was hired as Charles Laughton's stunt double for 'The Private Life of Henry VIII,' starting him on a modest movie career.
He was a major draw, with the Associated Press noting in 1937, 'In the past two years, it is estimated 1,500,000 saw him perform.'
In ending his political campaign, he noted, 'The things they say in politics no honest man can take.... Wrestling is on the level, but politics isn't.'
Despite his age, he rejoined the army during World War II, serving as First Sergeant of the Military Intelligence Training Center at Camp Ritchie, Maryland.
