(June 1, 1935-July 28, 2009)
Born in Ridgeland, South Carolina
Birth name was Frederick J. Eikerenkoetter II
Founded the United Church of Jesus Christ for All People (1958)
At his 70s peak, had a weekly radio and TV audience of 2.5 million
Early preacher of the 'prosperity gospel'
Why he might be annoying
He called his philosophy 'Thinkonomics.'
His preaching put material wealth way ahead of spirituality.
He said followers who donated to him would receive 'money up to your armpits.'
He sold followers an 'enemy fixer' that would 'get rid of your enemies without getting into trouble.'
Commenting on his fleet of Rolls, Bentleys and other luxury cars, he said 'My garages runneth over.'
He influenced later prosperity preachers like Creflo Dollar.
Why he might not be annoying
He was a chaplain in the Air Force.
He appeared on the Hank Williams, Jr., single 'Mind Your Own Business.'
He was suggested for Secretary of the Treasury in Parliament's 'Chocolate City.'
He had a sense of humor about his money-grubbing: after relating Jesus' parable about how difficult it is for a rich man to get into heaven, he would say, 'Think how hard it must be for a poor man to get in. He doesn't even have a bribe for the gatekeeper.'
