    Wrote the plays 'Panic' (1935), 'The Fall of the City' (1937), 'The Land of the Free' (1938), 'The Trojan Horse' (1952), 'J.B.' (1958), 'Scratch' (1971) and 'The Great American Fourth of July Parade' (1975)
    Wrote the non-fiction works 'A Time To Speak' (1941), 'A Time To Act' (1943), 'Poetry and Experience' (1961), 'A Continuing Journey' (1968) and 'The Letters of Archibald MacLeish, 1907-1982' (1983)
    Librarian of Congress (1939-44)
    Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs (1944-45)

Why he might be annoying:

    He worked as a lawyer for three years, then resigned as he was about to be named partner.
    He wrote for and edited 'Fortune' magazine while declaring capitalism 'symbolically dead.'
    His appointment as Librarian of Congress was controversial due to his lack of a library sciences degree and his left-wing views.
    Much of his poetry was derivative of Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He graduated first in his class from Harvard Law School.
    During World War I, he served as an ambulance driver and later as a captain of artillery.
    He was married to Ada Hitchcock for 65 years until his death.
    He won two Pulitzer Prizes for poetry (1933,1953) and one for drama (1959).
    He wrote , 'The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns momentarily from the herd and thinks for himself.'
