Why he might be annoying:

    He was the baby of 7 children.
    He nearly drowned on Sydney's Bondi Beach as a little boy.
    He warned aviatrix Jean Batten: 'Don't attempt to break men's records--and don't fly at night.
    In an attempt to smash the England to Australia speed record, his plane disappeared over the Adaman Sea.
    The only things recovered were his plane's undercarriage leg and wheel, reeled in eighteen months later by Burmese fishermen.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He had an engaging smile.
    He received the Military Cross because he was shot down, losing part of his left foot, while serving in battle (1917).
    A few of his feats included the nascent trans-Pacific flight from the US to Australia, the initial flights between New Zealand and Australia, and the first non-stop flight across Australia.
    He left behind a toddler son.
    Numerous airports and schools were named in his honor.
