The Resume

    (1840-December 5, 1894)
    Born in South Dakota
Birth name was Matohinsda, which translates to 'Bear Shedding His Hair'
Chief of the Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux
Led warriors in the Battle of Little Bighorn (1876)
Led attacks on army troops along the Yellowstone River in 1872 and 1873
Lieutenant to Chief Sitting Bullin battle
Forced to surrender at Poplar Creek, Montana
Spent the rest of his life at Standing Rock Reservation

Why he might be annoying:

He was famous for his hot temper and fanatical racism towards whites.
He was a polygamist; married to as many as four wives in his lifetime.
The most widely circulated photo of him resembles a male model on the cover of a tawdry romance novel.
Rumors persist that he got his name in later years from white soldiers who deemed his actions to be rash, but he actually got it when he attempted to eat the gall bladder of a dead animal as a child.
He endorsed the idea of Indian assimilation and encouraged Indians to 'adopt the ways of the white man,' near the end of his life.
He was one of the most feared Indian Chiefs of the Sioux tribe, but he has historically been overshadowed by his contemporaries, Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse.
Indian Department agents tried to promote him as the 'anti-Sitting Bull' 'good Indian,' but they failed to make him as famous.
He was accused of exaggerating his role in the Battle of Little Bighorn (figuring into the government's strategy to minimize Sitting Bull's role in the Battle).
He feuded constantly with Sitting Bull in later years, allegedly even calling him a coward.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was one of the greatest and most pragmatic Sioux generals in American history.
His father abandoned him as an infant.
He was Sitting Bull's trusted right-hand man and was deemed more pragmatic & a superior strategist.
He was photogenic and was considered to have the best build/physique of the Lakota Sioux warriors.
Legend has it he was captured, bayonetted, and left for dead by the military at Fort Berthold only to survive in time to join Crazy Horse and kick Gen. George Crook's ass in the Battle of Rosebud Creek.
The Battle of Little Bighorn was provoked when his village on the Bighorn River was attacked, killing several of his family members. He proceeded to lead the attacks which decimated Custer's 7th Cavalry as an act of revenge.
When Buffalo Bill Cody came seeking to acquire both him and Sitting Bull for his Wild West Show, Gall turned him down, saying 'I am not an animal to be exhibited before a crowd.'
He was ignored when he warned his fellow tribe members about the Ghost Dance's potential to spark violence, but he was proven right.
His feud with Sitting Bull was instigated by the Indian Dept. to ensure a lack of unity (he was deeply upset when his mentor was arrested and killed).
He stopped cooperating with the government after the Massacre of Wounded Knee.
