The Resume

    (January 7, 1913-March 9, 1975)
    Born in Omaha, Nebraska
Birth name was Bernice Maude Gaunt
Appeared in the films ‘Manhattan Melodrama’ (1934), ‘San Francisco’ (1936), ‘The Big Broadcast of 1937’ (1937), ‘Waikiki Wedding’ (1937), ‘The Big Broadcast of 1938’ (1938), ‘Thanks for the Memory’ (1938), ‘Paris Honeymoon’ (1939), ‘Rhythm Romance’ (1939), ‘Kisses for Breakfast’ (1941) and ‘A Song for Miss Julie’ (1945)
Cast member on the radio program ‘The Bob Burns Show’ (1943-47)
Best known for duetting with Bob Hope on the original version of ‘Thanks for the Memory’ in ‘The Big Broadcast of 1938’

Why she might be annoying:

She sang in not-very-convincing blackface in ‘Manhattan Melodrama.’
She walked off the set of ‘This Way Please,’ claiming Mary Livingstone was sabotaging her scenes (1937).
Whoever wrote her bio for the Turner Classic Movies website seems to have conflated her with a second Shirley Ross, since her list of credits includes two movies released in 1987 – a dozen years after the death of this Shirley Ross.

Why she might not be annoying:

While in college, she successfully auditioned to be the vocalist in Gus Arnheim’s big band.
She appeared in five films with either Bob Hope or Bing Crosby.
She said about leaving Hollywood to focus on raising her children, ‘I’ve never been sorry I made the decision. One of these days, I’ll make a real good grandmother.’
Hope and Crosby sent a five-foot tall cross of white carnations with a spray of red roses to her funeral.
