Why he might be annoying:

    He was nicknamed 'Guga.'
    He was described by the 'Telegraph' as having 'the loudest and most protracted grunt of anyone currently playing.'
    He skipped Wimbledon in 2001 after officials rejected his demand to be seeded #1, despite his never having gotten past the quarterfinals in previous tournaments.
    He underwent hip surgery (February, 2002) and was never a dominant player again.

Why he might not be annoying:

    At the 2000 Masters Cup, he became the only player to defeat both Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi in the same major tournament.
    At the French Open, he drew a heart in the clay to thank the fans for their support (2001).
    He gave all his trophies as souveniers to his younger brother Guilherne, who had cerebral palsy as a result of prolonged oxygen deprivation during birth.
    He received the ATP Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award for his fundraising on behalf of cerebral palsy-related charities (2003).
