The Resume

    (March 6, 1956-November 12, 2011)
Born in Oxford, England, United Kingdom
    English cricketer
    Right-handed batsman
    Scored 17,558 runs in 335 first-class matches
    Somerset County Cricket Captain (1986-88)
Wisden Cricketer of the Year (1988)
Reported on cricket for the 'Sydney Morning Herald' and Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Why he might be annoying:

When he was covering cricket, he wore a straw sunhat at all times, even inside the commentary box.
He was estranged from his family, with his father describing him as an 'unconventional loner' with 'sometimes a withering tongue.'
A colleague wrote, 'Nothing could rile him more, after he became an Australian citizen, than to be described as an Englishman of any kind, even a former one.'
He was given a suspended jail sentence after pleading guilty to assault for caning, on their bare buttocks, three 19-year-old cricketers who were staying at his house in England (2001).
One of the canees said, 'The problem was not so much that he caned us but wanted to examine the marks. That’s when I decided to get out of his house.'
He died when he jumped out of a sixth-floor hotel window in Capetown, South Africa, when police arrived to question him about sexual assault charges filed by a 26-year-old male student.

Why he might not be annoying:

Steve Waugh said he was 'without doubt, cricket's premier journalist.'
He felt nationalism should be avoided in cricket writing.
Outside cricket, he campaigned for human rights and social justice in Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
He established the Learning for a Better World (LBW) Trust to help students from cricket-playing third-world countries complete their education.
He also spent $100,000 of his own money to help put African youths through high school and college.
