Why NASCAR might be annoying
They waste gas and used leaded fuel until 2008.
Most of the early star drivers where 'moonshiners.'
Some people describe fans as 'rednecks.'
The cars are no longer considered 'stock.'
NASCAR was founded in 1947, but their first live televised race wasn't until 1979.
They don't have a big world wide fan following.
Until 2003, their championship trophy was sponsored by a tobacco company (Winston Cup).
One of its biggest stars, Dale Earnhardt, was killed while driving in the sport's biggest event, the Daytona 500.
There are very few (if any) drivers who are women or minorities.
They allow alcohol companies to sponsor cars, even though drinking and driving don't mix.
The only make left turns (and fail to signal).
Why NASCAR might not be annoying
They making a strong push for more minorities to get involved in their sport.
They are trying hard to get away from their 'redneck' image.
In 1998, over 120 million people watched NASCAR races on TV.
Dan Marino, Julius Erving, Joe Gibbs, and Mark McGwire have all been team owners in NASCAR.
They are always looking to improve the safety for everybody involved in their sport when they are at the race track.
Many major corporations are involved in NASCAR like Coca-Cola, Nextel, McDonald's, Budweiser, Miller Brewing Company, M&M's, UPS, FedEx, Lowes, Dupont and the Home Depot.
Since 2004, their championship trophy is no longer the Winston Cup; it's now the Nextel Cup.
It runs the top-tier Nextel Cup series, the lower-tier Busch series, and a truck series.
Its competitive balance rules make their races more even than, say, Formula One races.
It went from being a southern regional sport to a very successful national racing series.
