The Resume

    (March 13, 1901-October 14, 1983)
Born in Dobbs Ferry, New York
Portrayed Marshal Micah Torrance in The Rifleman (1958-63)
Acted in 'To Kill a Mockingbird,' 'Red River,' 'Giant,' 'The Bad Seed,' 'Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid,' 'Ride Beyond Vengeance,' and 'El Dorado'

Why he might be annoying:

    He was divorced.
He was typecast in Westerns (some of which included playing Indian Chiefs).
He was replaced by DeForest Kelley as the ship's doctor on Star Trek after the show's pilot was picked up.
His substantial body of work was eclipsed by his role as Lucas McCain's partner - with loads of subtextual tension to boot (Micah called him 'Lucas Boy' for crying out loud!)
The 'are they gay' rumors were abound enough for execs to intervene by casting Joan Taylor ('Miss Millie') as Lucas' love interest for the third season - basically the duo's own Aunt Harriet.
His being identified exclusively as Micah means that first time viewers of 'To Kill a Mockingbird' will tend to go, 'hey that's the guy from the Rifleman!' during the powerful courtroom scene.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was in some of the greatest movies ever made.
He struggled with a debilitating stutter throughout his life.
He served in the US Navy during World War I.
He made the successful transition from silent movies to sound, and then to television.
Collectively, he appeared in close to four hundred films.
He was still getting mail from all over the world from Rifleman fans at the time of his death.
He was a lifelong friend of John Wayne and reportedly taught the Duke his famous 'swagger' (they made 26 movies together).
