Why he might be annoying:

He had an unhappy marriage to a suffragette.
He was described as being a 'fool' and 'crank.'
He initially supported the Southern states' rights to secede from the Union (1860).
He bailed Jefferson Davis out of prison.
He ran for president on both the Democratic and Liberal Republican tickets, and lost (1872).
He suffered a nervous breakdown.
While campaigning for president, he lost control of his newspaper to Whitelaw Reid, owner of the 'New York Herald.'
Once spotting Reid, Greeley shouted, 'You son of a bitch, you stole my newspaper,' and then died.

Why he might not be annoying:

He worked himself up from humble beginnings, growing up on a farm.
He strongly opposed slavery.
He denounced corporate monopolies.
His newspaper became extremely popular, with a circulation of over 250,000.
He supported the North after the outbreak of the Civil War.
Following the war, he supported equality for all the freed slaves.
