Her fondness for disasters and sudden death as topics led critic Bill Nye to call her 'worse than a Gatling gun.'
Mark Twain parodied her as Emmeline Grangerford in 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.'
She declared, 'Literary is a work very hard to do.'

After being jeered by the audience at a poetry reading, she observed, 'You have come here and paid 25¢ to see a fool. I receive $75, and I see a whole houseful of fools.'
Comedic poet Ogden Nash said she inspired him to become a 'great bad poet' instead of a 'bad good poet.'
