He did tedious tasks as a chemist before discovering LSD.
He discovered LSD by accident while preparing a sample of the natural lysergic acid in ergot.
He had strange visions and then decided to intentionally ingest 25/thousandths of a gram of LSD-25 dissolved in water.
He then rode home on his bike while on acid and tripped out the whole way home.
This day is celebrated as 'Bicycle Day' by stoners.
All research into the drug's effects was banned after the counterculture embraced it.
His drug was used controversially by the CIA in San Fransisco brothels.
He went on to study the hallucinogenic substances in magic mushrooms.
When he took mushrooms in Mexico, he thought his doctor was an Aztec priest who was going to open his chest and rip out his heart.

He is not the kind of person you'd expect to be taking drugs.
His drug has influenced many artists and writers, including Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Tom Wolfe and Aldous Huxley.
He has invented three other drugs which are still on the market.
He is intelligent and has lived a full life, eliminating two stereotypes of drug users.
He is against massive use of LSD but feels it serves some purpose medically.
He is a member of the Nobel Prize Committee.
He has not used LSD in over 30 years.
