Why he might be annoying:

    He wore nerdy-looking eyeglasses.
    He initially studied veterinary science at the University of the Pacific, but his department head told him not to waste his time, and study music.
    He couldn't read sheet music and only graduated after promising to never become a piano teacher.
    In 1980, he found religion, converting to Catholicism.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He became just the second jazz musician to appear on the cover of Time Magazine, with Louis Armstrong being the first.
    He refused nightclub and TV appearances where Quartet member, Eugene Wright, an African-American, would be excluded.
    He does extensive charity work.
