U.S. Governor

The Resume

    (December 9, 1954- )
    Born in Warrensburg, Missouri
    Birth name was Mary Copeland
Graduated from Oklahoma State University (1977)
14th Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma (1995-2007)
Represented Oklahoma's 5th District in the U.S. House of Representatives (2007-11)
Elected the 27th Governor of Oklahoma (2010)
    Republican

Why she might be annoying:

She was accused of plagiarizing her Inauguration speech from NPR.
Her first husband proposed to her at a Playboy Mansion party.
Her married last name is meme-worthy (she even mistakenly posed next to a student in a 'Mary Failin' T-shirt).
She was booed after appearing on the Kiss Cam with her husband at an Oklahoma City Thunder playoff game.
She's signed into law a record number of anti-abortion bills (20), but has also been a stern advocate for the death penalty via lethal injection/nitrogen asphyxiation.
Most famously, she meddled in the execution of murderer Clayton Lockett, overturning a stay by the State Supreme Court despite a lack of tested drugs for lethal execution. (The botched execution was abandoned when Lockett could not be sedated, leaving him writhing in pain for nearly 45 minutes until he dropped dead from a heart attack.)
Then-Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel accused her of violating her state's civil obligations after she ordered state-owned National Guard facilities to deny spousal benefits to same-sex couples (she reasoned Oklahoma law did not recognize the validity of such unions).
When she was asked during a debate to name three branches of government, she answered 'Supreme Court, the people and the people with the ability to vote.'

Why she might not be annoying:

She came from a family of Democrats, and only switched Party affiliations while in college.
She made history as the first woman to be sworn in as Oklahoma's Lieutenant Governor, in 1995.
She was only the second woman to represent Oklahoma in the House of Representatives, after Alice Mary Robertson in 1921.
The Oklahoma City bombings occurred only a few months into her term as Lt. Governor.
In the aftermath of the attack, she commissioned a task force to build a new childcare center to replace the one destroyed in the bombing (it opened in 1998).
She was inducted into the Oklahoma Aviation Hall of Fame (1998).
She was inducted into the Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame (2005).
Her Gubernatorial victory in 2010 was a legitimate upset; she beat off three challengers in the primary and going on to beat the state's Lt. Governor (she received little outside help other than an endorsement from Sarah Palin).
She is pro-life but vetoed a law passed by the state legislature that would have made getting an abortion a felony.
She was both on the shortlist to be Donald Trump's running mate, and later to be Secretary of the Interior after he won the Presidency.
Her daughter (who works as a model, makeup artist, and musician but briefly camped her trailer on the mansion lawn), was named 'the most interesting governor's daughter in the country' by the Washington Post.
