    His early roles were described as 'snoops, unwanted suitors and general, all-around pests.'
    During those early days, he purchased an interest in an iron foundry and told an interviewer, 'Several times I have been on the verge of giving up acting entirely, and dedicating myself to manufacturing.'
    His personalized license plate read 'GRNACRS.'
    He served with the Marines during WWII and fought at the Battle of Iwo Jima.
    He and fellow character actor L.Q. Jones formed their own production company, which produced the sci-fi cult classic 'A Boy and His Dog.'
    He was a Little League umpire for seven years, including umpiring a Little League World Series game.
