(July 30, 1916-November 19, 2007)
Born in Preston, England, United Kingdom
Portrayed Mr. Whipple in commercials for Charmin toilet paper
Admonished customers 'Please don't squeeze the Charmin,' only to be revealed as a closet Charmin-squeezer himself
Why he might be annoying
Before becoming Mr. Whipple, he was typecast as a drunk.
He was to play the sidekick on 'Sgt. Preston of the Yukon,' but was replaced by King the dog.
The first Mr. Whipple commercial was filmed in Flushing, New York.
In a mid-70s poll, the Mr. Whipple ads were ranked last in believability.
He complained, 'I was in movies, but once I did Charmin, nobody ever remembered any of the movies I did. I couldn't get another job.'
He also complained, 'The kind of movies they're making today, I'll stick with toilet paper.' (Make up your mind!)
Why he might not be annoying
He served with the Canadian Air Force in World War II.
He appeared in 16 episodes of Bewitched, more than cast members Paul Lynde and Maurice Evans.
His 504 Mr. Whipple ads from 1964 to 1989 set a record for longest running TV commercial character.
At the TV Land Awards, the Mr. Whipple ads were named Best Retro Commercial.
He received a lifetime supply of Charmin from Proctor and Gamble.
