    His nickname 'Pop' came as a result of his premature baldness during his playing days.

    He was involved in a feud with Cardinals owner Walt Wolfner, which influenced his decision to resign as the team's head coach.
    His appointment as the Oilers head coach was a trade between head coaches as him and Wally Lemm swapped positions.
    He initially balked at Wellington Mara's request for the Giants team employees to reside in the New York metropolitan area.
    He is the only person in football history to serve as a head coach in the CFL (predecessor WIFU), AFL and the NFL.
    He guided the Eskimos to three consecutive Grey Cup championships (1954-56).
    He was a durable player during his tenure at the University of Oklahoma, never missing a game during his four years at the school.
    He was a member of the Cardinals team that won their only NFL championship in the pre-Super Bowl era (1947).
    He was extremely proud of his Oklahoma roots, and maintained his residence in Norman regardless of where his football career took him.
