Why he might be annoying:

He claimed his hobby was ‘thinking’ (well, bully for you, Brainiac).
He bitched about how English was inferior to classical Greek.
He also spoke the obscure Cornish language.
His famous novel ‘Lord of the Flies’ is brutal and disturbing.
The book is sometimes criticized as pretentious and heavy-handed.
It was shot down by 21 publishers before anybody bought it.
He was unable to repeat that book's success.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was an English teacher.
He was a sailor in the British navy during World War II, and saw action during the invasion of Normandy.
He won the Nobel and Booker prizes.
‘Lord of the Flies’ is considered a masterpiece.
To this day, it is still banned in some schools.
The book was satirized on an episode of ‘The Simpsons.’
