Politician

The Resume

    (August 27, 1942- )
Born in Whitbourne, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Member of the House of Assembly (Grand Falls-Windsor-Green Bay South, 1972–1989)
3rd Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador (Progressive Conservative Party, 1979–1989)
Architect / signatory of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (signed into law April 17, 1982)
Co-founder of Wessex Society of Newfoundland and Labrador (1984, patron)

Why he might be annoying:

He goes by his middle name.
In fairness, if your real first name was Alfred, you might not be quite so keen on it, either.
Having been a signatory of the Atlantic Accord (February 11, 1985, a few weeks before calling a provincial election), he proclaimed himself ‘The Great Negotiator.’
Once he left politics, he would go on to sit on a number of boards (including the CBC of the 1990s).
He retired to the opposite coast of the country — specifically Vancouver Island!

Why he might not be annoying:

Before politics, he was a high school teacher in the countryside.
Having entered the House of Assembly at 29, he would become the youngest Premier (at 36) in more than a century.
He was one of the few public officials of the time with a working-class background (in his case, from an outport).
As the only Charter signatory still alive during the 2020 ‘pandemic,’ he became a key figure in addressing federal government overreach.
He became an endorser of Maxime Bernier’s People’s Party of Canada for the 2021 federal election (which despite being shut out cleared the 10 percent total vote threshold in 26 ridings).
