Following the capture of his Division Commander at Gettysburg, he led his Division to safe ground at Cemetary Ridge and repelled an attack by Jubal Early's troops.
While Governor of Mississippi, he took several steps to advance the rights of freed slaves and appointed the first black office-holders in state history.
