Targeted for assassination by the Black Hand, a Serbian organization that feared Ferdinand would make Serbian independence more difficult
Traveled in cars to Sarajevo for an official visit
His driver managed to get his car away from a hand grenade thrown at him
Two other members of the procession and about twelve bystanders were injured
Later shot, along with his wife, when his convoy took a wrong turn
Last words were 'It is nothing'
Died shortly afterwards at the Governor's residence
Why he might be annoying
His assassination caused Austria-Hungary to invade Serbia, igniting the First World War.
The man who shot him, Gavrilo Princip, was not aiming his gun and hit him right through the jugular vein by luck.
Princip was actually on the wrong road and would have completely missed him if he had taken the right one.
He got his wife killed as well as himself.
He became heir to the throne only because the two previous ones died.
Why he might not be annoying
His assassination was not really incited by any misdeeds (it was political).
He was shot while going to the hospital to see the victims of the earlier attack.
He said of his wife, 'Soph is a treasure, I am indescribably happy. She looks after me so much, I am doing wonderfully.'
Namesake for a rock band.
