Why he might be annoying:

    He ran away to sea as a cabin boy when he was thirteen.
    He was married seven times.
    He fought a duel with Robert Porterfield (who suspected Buntline of conducting an affair with his wife) and killed him (March 14, 1846).
    He was an instigator of the Astor Palace Riot in New York City that left 23 dead (May 10, 1849).
    He was a heavy drinker who lectured for the temperance movement.
    He joined the Union army during the Civil War but was dishonorably discharged for drunkenness.
    He was scornful of his work, commenting ‘I found that to make a living, I must write trash for the masses.’

Why he might not be annoying:

    He received a commission as a midshipman in the US Navy from President Martin Van Buren after he rescued the crew of a boat that had been capsized by a ferry in New York City’s East River (1838).
    He received a $600 bounty for capturing two murderers in Kentucky (1845).
    After the Porterfield duel, he was captured by a lynch mob and hanged from an awning, but was discovered by friends and cut down in time.
    His novels turned obscure army scout William F. Cody into national hero ‘Buffalo Bill.’
    He was the highest-paid author of his day, outearning Mark Twain and Walt Whitman.
