Why he might be annoying:

He scored a goal against his own team after deflecting an American cross kick.
The goal was the winning goal for the Americans.
The Americans were known for having the worst soccer teams in the world.
The goal let the Americans advance to the second round for the first time in sixty years.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was murdered in Colombia 10 days after the match.
He was shot twelve times.
The murder was an obvious retaliation for the mistake, with the killer shouting 'Goal!' after each shot.
Colombian drug cartels who were said to have almost complete control over the team, have been suspected of killing him after huge gambling losses.
The entire team played poorly that day, but no one else was shot.
A Scottish soccer announcer said after the match 'the player ought to be shot for making a mistake like that.'
He was forced to apologize later.
The Colombian team had already lost one match against Romania.
